Flea control

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 20 Mule Team Borax
  • Neem oil
  • Dawn dish detergent
  • Capstar
  1. Step 1

These steps are for dogs, do not know about cats. Administer one dosage of Capstar tablet for up to 25 pounds. This can be found at most pet supply stores and comes in tablet form. Is safe for most any dog, even puppies. This works to kill fleas on the dog within a few hours of ingestion. This can be given again within days if needed. I have had very good success with this product, as my dogs are allergic to flea bites.

  2. Step 2

Bathe your pet in regular Dawn dish detergent. No extra added apple scent or bleach, just plain blue Dawn. Wet the dog with warm water (do not get in ears or eyes). Start lathering at neck and ear area. Smear a little wet on top of head, being gentle and careful not to get in eyes. The fleas try to run to this area after getting wet. Lather up from head to tail and don't forget between toes. Now let soak for at least 10 minutes. Find a book to read or talk on cell phone and stay with your pet. Now rinse all soap off, rubbing fur back and forth as you rinse. Towel dry and set free.

  3. Step 3

Simultaneously you will need to treat the carpets, floors, bedding and all areas that the dog sleeps, eats or plays in the house, with 20 Mule Team Borax. Use any container that you can punch holes in the lid (like a coffee can with plastic lid)to use for application. Put the Borax in the container and sprinkle everywhere. Leave the product for 48 hours (I have left longer) and then vacuum, sweep, wipe up residue. This dries the little boogers (fleas)out. Please see warning below about any toxicity of borax.

  4. Step 4

Purchase Neem oil from any pet supply or home & garden store. Mix small amount (teaspoon)with warm water and a drop of Dawn into a spray bottle. Make sure the bottle you use does not contain any residue of other chemicals. Spray this on the dog and rub in all over. Or spray your hand and rub (or give a massage) and scratches. They will find that a little more pleasant. They do not appreciate the smell of this mix. Always, being careful about the eyes and ears, please. We are trying to help them, not harm them :>) Also the yard area or dog run can be sprayed with neem oil mix (maybe a little stronger) with the Dawn, which gives it sticking power, to chase away those fleas hanging outside waiting for a ride.

  5. Step 5

Repeat all of the above if needed. Spring and Summer bring out the pests, so let the war begin. Us verses them.

Tips & Warnings
  • Warnings posted below: please read and understand that the Neem oil and the borax were not intended for animal or human ingestion or breathing without harmful results. I have used the 20 Mule Team Borax on my carpets and dogs inside for the 48 hours without any complications (or none observed). I would suppose that would depend on your particular dog and circumstance.
