How to Decorate a Child's Bedroom in a Western Theme

Some children go through a phase of obsessions with becoming a cowboy and living out on the open range. Dreams of the Old West can come to life in your child's bedroom by using a Western theme for decorating.

Things You'll Need

• Wood planks, paneling board or wallpaper

Instructions

1. Add old wood planking either as a wainscoting or a focal wall, if you have carpentry skills. Or use rustic-looking paneling board or wallpaper. Another idea is to use 1-inch-by-4-inch boards and create a "corral fence" along the walls. Use three boards lengthwise along the wall about 18 inches apart, and then add a fence post in the center and on the corners.

2. Top blinds with a variety of options, such as bandanna fabric, old blue jean pockets stapled to a board, or raffia with Western cutouts and bandanna fabric bows. Or create a topper to look like the back of an old covered wagon.

3. Replace closet doors with swinging "saloon" doors.

4. Use horseshoes for hooks.

5. Antique the furniture to give it a rustic look.

6. Use an old wash tub for toys or shoes.

7. Stencil Western symbols on the walls as a border near the ceiling and around windows and doors.

8. Purchase a roll of sisal rope and use it as a wainscot or trim around the ceiling, doors or windows.

9. Use "wanted" posters to showcase photos.

10. Cover the floor with a giant rag rug.

11. Add accessories, such as old cowboy hats, boots, a lasso or even a giant wooden rocking horse.
