Being diagnosed as having diabetes doesn't make your sweet tooth go away. But I'm sure dessert was one of the first things your doctor or dietician told you to cut out of your diet.

Many diabetics either feel they will never be able to have desserts again or they will have to break the rules and possibly endanger their health to satisfy their sweet tooth's cravings.

If you are facing this dilemma, there is good news for you. Just follow these tips and you'll stay healthy and craving free! Warning - discuss these ideas with your health professionals before indulging.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Diet soda is a good way to trick your sweet tooth into thinking you've splurged - without adding any sugar or calories into your diet.

  2. Step 2

If your diabetes is well controlled with diet and medication you can share a dessert with someone you love. A smaller portion of sugary desserts will have less effect on your blood glucose level.

  3. Step 3

No one to share with when you're having a craving? Just order the smallest portion or even a child-size serving of ice cream, frozen yogurt or other snack. Extra points if you can stop yourself from eating all of it!

  4. Step 4

If you're needing a chocolate fix, give in to a nice cup of sugar-free cocoa.

  5. Step 5

Fat-free and sugar-free ice cream has come a long way in terms of flavor and satisfaction. Give a few varieties and flavors a try and you're sure to find something you like that only feels like you're cheating. Sugar-free frozen yogurt is usually safe for cravings and for weight loss.

  6. Step 6

Fruity popsicles have less processed sugar than ice cream bars - and even the sugar-free ones are tasty and refreshing.

  7. Step 7

If you're making desserts at home, go sugar-free then portion the dessert into small servings and freeze them individually. If you have "safe" desserts at hand you'll be less tempted to indulge in dangerous desserts.

Tips & Warnings
  • Keep in mind that even "safe" desserts that are fat-free and low sugar are still packed with calories. You must discuss these options with your doctor and other health professionals to make sure your diabetes will allow for these treats.
