Thatch is dead grass that chokes off your lawn preventing nutrients and air from reaching the roots of your lawn. De-thatching a lawn is relatively easy and can add years of beauty to your lawn.

Renting the equipment is cheap considering the cost to replace a lawn that is neglected. By removing thatch you will be able to add years to the life of your lawn.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • De-thatcher rental
  • An afternoon
  • Many lawn bags or a place to compost the thatch
  1. Step 1

Rent your de-thatcher at most lawn and garden or hardware stores. Rental is usually in the $50 - $60 a day range. Why not share the expense with a neighbor and tackle both lawns?

  2. Step 2

The de-thatcher machine runs like a lawn mower except it has tines that remove the stubborn thatch in your lawn.

  3. Step 3

Run the machine back and forth across your lawn and then rake and bag the thatch. De-thatching can be done once or twice per year but not in the hot summer months.

Tips & Warnings
  • Take your time removing thatch. You will gather piles and piles of the stuff allowing your lawn to breath again.
  • Wear safety equipment like goggles and ear plugs
