Void a Check
Void a Check

This article will explain step-by-step how you void out a check. This process only works if you are voiding your own check. You might do this when setting up something such as direct deposit.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Checkbook
  • Ballpoint Pen
  • Checkbook Register
  1. Step 1

This process only works if you are voiding your own check. This is done when you need to send the bank all of your account information to get direct deposit set up.

  2. Step 2

You will want to use a ballpoint pen or some other type of felt tip pen. Do not use a pencil.

  3. Step 3

You need to start out with a perfectly blank check without any writing on it.

  4. Step 4

Next, you will write VOID across the entire surface of the check. Depending on where you live you might have to write VOID on the check three times but usually one VOID will be acceptable.

  5. Step 5

In your register, you will want to write down the check number and VOID. This way you do not forget.

Tips & Warnings
  • Do not forget to write down the check number and void into your register so that you do not forget that the check was voided out.
  • If you are trying to VOID out a check simply because you made an error, shred the check into very small pieces instead of writing VOID on the check.
  • If you are trying to stop payment on a check do not write VOID on the check. You can go to your bank and stop payment on a check for a small fee.
