Memorizing Bible verses is a useful tool. You will be prepared to talk to anybody about religion, be able to expound on scripture, and have improved memory skills. However, for most people memorizing is not easy or fun. Use the tips below to learn how to memorize easily.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Bible
  • note cards
  • time
  • determination
  • prayer
  1. Step 1

Pick a Bible passage that is encouraging, inspirational, your favorite, popular, or very doctrinal.

  2. Step 2

First, memorize where the scripture passage is in the Bible: the name of the book, the chapter, and the verse. (ex: John 3:16) Even if you don’t have the verse memorized, you will be able to find it quickly.

  3. Step 3

Next, understand what the message is. For missionary purposes, the most important thing is that you can explain what a scripture means, not recite it word for word. Also, it’s easier to memorize verses if you know the topic. (ex: John 3:16=God’s love)

  4. Step 4
    note cards
    note cards

Write the Bible passage on a note card, or type it up and paste it on a note card, and carry it with you.

  5. Step 5

Read and reread the passage for a week. Expose yourself to the scripture a lot before trying to memorize it. Think of all the songs you sing along to; you know the words usually because you’ve heard them over and over again, not because you tried memorizing them.

  6. Step 6

Next, recite the first phrase (or verse for a long passage) and repeat it all day. The second day add the second phrase/verse, repeating both the first and second phrases/verses together. Continue until you’ve recited the whole scripture passage.

  7. Step 7

Write out the first letter of every word in the scripture passage. Then try to recite the verses from memory only looking at the letters. (ex: John 3:16 would be “fgsltwthghobstwbihsnpbhel”)

  8. Step 8

Make a new note card with the scripture reference on one side (John 3:16) and a keyword (love) or picture (heart) on the other. Recite from memory as much as you can.

  9. Step 9

Now try reciting the entire passage without any aids. If you mess up, keep going until you finish the passage or can’t remember any more. Quickly glance at the scripture to fix your mistake and try again.

  10. Step 10

Once you can recite the Bible passage at any time, anywhere, for a week, then you’ve memorized it for good!

Tips & Warnings
  • This method applies to other religious works as well, such as the Book of Mormon, or any book passage or quote you want to memorize.
  • If you are really creative, sing the verses to a made-up or existing tune.
  • Pray for God's help in memorizing and in finding an opportunity to share the scripture.

Wonderful article!!
Another tip: Tape the note cards in the bathroom or in the kitchen so you can go over them when you have extra time. One girl memorized the Romans 12 by simply reviewing it while washing dishes!
