How to build a custom planter box out of scrap wood. To fit in an unused space. This can be made from purchased materials or out of scrap wood. This box can be used to plant your favorite flowers, veggies, or fruit.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Scrap Wood (2"x6" and 2"x4")
  • Drill
  • Wood Screws (Decking Screws preferred they don't rust)
  • Power Saw or Table Saw
  • Tape Measure
  • Top Soil/ Potting Mix Soil
  • Paint or Stain(Optional)
  1. Step 1

Measure your space. Design a box that will fill your space or need. Determine how high you want or need your planter box to be.

  2. Step 2

Measure and cut wood to predetermined lengths. Lay 2 or 3 of the 2" x 6" boards flat cut a length of 2" x 4", 12" inches shorter than the flat 2" x 6" (6" on top and bottom) Screw the 2" x 4" to the 2" x 6" to create walls.

  3. Step 3

Stand up the walls and screw them together.

  4. Step 4

Fill with topsoil and potting mix.

  5. Step 5

Paint or stain your planter box. (optional)

  6. Step 6

Plant your favorite Flowers, Veggies, or Fruit and enjoy!

Tips & Warnings
  • Build the box in pieces and assemble in it's permanent home. The wood gets heavy.
  • If you are building this as a permanent fixture I would suggest using pressure treated lumber that has thoroughly dried. (to avoid chemicals getting into your soil)
  • If you make a smaller box you can add a floor to make it portable. Just keep in mind that the soil gets heavy and you want to make the flooring sturdy enough to hold the soil.
  • If you add a floor make sure you drill holes to allow drainage.
  • When I built my boxes I used 2" x 6" that I had left over from another project, you might try and build a frame and assemble with heavy duty ply wood rather than 2" x 6" decking.
  • Once you build it and fill with dirt it will be quite hard to move without removing all the dirt.
