How to File for a Free Federal Tax Extension

The last day to file taxes on time, April 15, has arrived, and you are not prepared. You can file for a free federal tax extension online in order to put off your taxes until you are fully prepared to file.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Free Federal Tax Extension
    At the Internal Revenue Service website visit the "Free Federal Extension" page in order to file for a free federal tax extension. You will be taken to the Free File page where you will be able to easily file for a tax extension.

  2. Step 2

    Choose Fillable Forms
    On the next page click on "Choose Fillable Forms" and then "Leave the IRS Website" in order to access tax extension forms that are necessary to file for a free federal tax extension. Click on "Start Free File Fillable Forms" to begin filing for an extension online. At this point you will be prompted to either create a new account or put in a user ID and password. Complete whatever steps are needed to create an account at the IRS website. Your password must contain at least 8 characters including a number and a symbol. Be sure to print or save your sign in information.

  3. Step 3

    Choose the Correct Tax Form
    On the following page click on the form you want to file, including the 1040 EZ, 1040A or 1040 form in order to start the filing process . This will take you to Step 1 of the Free File Fillable Forms where you can fill out tax forms required to for a free federal tax extension.

  4. Step 4

    IRS Extension Help
    Look in the upper right corner of this page and click File an Extension or EXT in the green tab. You will be taken to a page where you can file for an automatic extension from the IRS. For help with how to file for a free federal tax extension scroll to the bottom of the page and click on Filing an Extension Instructions or Do the Math in order to get extra help. Submit the extension form and when completed, submit to the IRS. You will need a pin to access any information online concerning your extension.

  5. Step 5

    Print and Save
