This is a step by step guide to stopping breakage in hair that has been overprocessed or over-stressed.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Clarifying shampoo
  • Gentle moisturizing shampoo
  • Aphogee 2-step protein treatment, Nexxus Emergencee, or Sebastian Penetraitt
  • ORS Olive Oil Replenishing Pak, Neutrogena Triple Moisture Daily Deep Conditioner, or similar deep Moisturizing Hair conditioner
  1. Step 1

If you are experiencing hair breakage due to using a relaxer, color treatment, or both, you should gather the items required first.

  2. Step 2

Gather at least 2 towels and remove any clothing that is valuable. Set up either your hair dryer or blow dryer. Additionally, the product Aphogee has a very strong smell. If possible, open a window or turn on ventilation or a fan.

  3. Step 3

You should first wash your hair once with a clarifying shampoo. This is a stripping shampoo which will remove any product build up or oil you have in your hair or on your scalp. Your hair will feel smooth and squeaky clean when it is rinsed. Be very gentle with your hair throughout this process.

  4. Step 4

GENTLY section off hair into 4 sections with your fingers only. Do not comb or brush. The sections do not need to be even, this is only to make the handling of your hair easier.

  5. Step 5

Apply Aphogee 2 Step Treatment to each section, removing the clip. Saturate each section thoroughly, and squeeze out any excess. Then replace the clip

  6. Step 6

Wrap a towel around your neck to catch any drips. Have an additional towel to protect your face. Sit under your hood dryer on med-high until the treatment dries hard. This will take 30-45 minutes. Do not touch, manipulate, comb or brush your hair. Your hair is fine. The heat from the dryer is infusing protein into the core of your hair shaft, restoring its strength.

  7. Step 7

Now, rinse the treatment from your hair with luke warm water. Let the water flow through the hair until it is soft again. Do not manipulate the hair.

  8. Step 8

Grab your moisturizing shampoo and shampoo the hair once again.

  9. Step 9

After you have rinsed the shampoo, squeeze out the excess water and saturate your hair with ORS Replenishing Pak treatment. Sit under a warm dryer for 20-30 minutes. Let treatment remain on the hair for 1 hour or longer if desired for extra conditioning.

  10. Step 10

Rinse the treatment thoroughly from the hair. You should notice significantly less breakage immediately, and continuing in the days and weeks to come. You can repeat this treatment every 4-6 weeks to help maintain the results.

Tips & Warnings
  • Neutrogena Anti-Residue clarifying shampoo is the one I recommend, but most clarifying shampoos are very similar.
  • One gentle shampoo option is Elasta QP Creme Conditioning. You should use a shampoo that gives you conditioner soft results.
  • Refrain from using heat or any more chemical processing until you no longer notice breakage or other signs of damage.
  • Hair that is breaking should never be handled roughly.
  • Hair should not be manipulated, combed, brushed, or bent while the treatment is dried onto the hair.
