How to Facilitate a Brainstorming Session

How to Facilitate a Brainstorming Session thumbnail
Keep control over a brainstorming session so participants stay focused on the task at hand.

A brainstorming session is used to stimulate ideas on a specific topic. You can do so individually or as a group. During a group brainstorming session, participants have a short amount of time to freely suggest solutions or ideas about the topic presented to them. It's important to control a brainstorming session so that it doesn't decline into a gossip or gripe session, and never let participants criticize others' ideas.

Instructions

    • 1

Remind participants what it means to brainstorm. Explain that you expect a free flow of ideas and that everyone will have time to participate. Remind the group that no ideas should be criticized or ridiculed.

    • 2

Present the topic that the session is centered around, and notify the group about how much time will be allotted for discussing ideas. Time limits may depend on the size of the group and the meeting schedule.

    • 3

Allow all participants to contribute their ideas. Look for ways to include all members of the group; you may call on each member or explain that they each can take a turn to share.

    • 4

List all suggestions on a white board or large piece of paper. Never reject a suggestion outright; remind participants that every idea will be discussed after the idea-forming phase.

    • 5

Discuss the listed suggestions when the allotted time is up. Invite the group to refine their ideas and explain how they relate to the topic. Encourage others to expand on the ideas that come up.

    • 6

Thank all members who have participated and show your appreciation for their efforts.

Tips & Warnings

  • Set up the meeting room up so all participants can see each other if possible. Sitting around a conference table can make everyone feel included.
