Intern: It's a dirty job - but somebody's got to do it. Unfortunately, most radio station employees start working as an intern. This means working long hours for free. While it is not the most exciting job - it will help you get your foot in the door at the radio station which should lead to bigger and better things.

Events: Since you won't be able to land a DJ job with no experience, you might want to consider working as a DJ for events. Weddings, proms, parties and special occasions all hire DJ's to provide the music and add some laughs. This is a great way to learn to work with people and play music. Working as an event deejay is also a great thing to have on your resume.

Fill In: If you are working at a radio station, you can ask to be put on the "fill in" list for deejays. In other words, if the main deejay gets sick - you can fill in for him or her to gain some experience. If you do get to fill in, be sure and get a recorded copy of your time on the air to show as a sample of your work.

Late, late night: Usually the first job any deejay will get will be the late, late shift. In other words you may be on air from 1 am to 5 am - not exactly prime time, but you will gain much needed experience. Some deejays work this shift for years before being offered a daytime shift. The fact is, if you stick with it - you will eventually achieve your goal of becoming a radio DJ!
