Step 1
Find the location nearest to you by going online to travelstate.gov. The site will list all the American consulates in Mexico, and anywhere else in the world. Once you find the location nearest you it would be a good idea to write the name, address, and phone number down so you can refer to it later.
-
Step 2
Check what documents you need by calling the consulate nearest you. It is better to call because the online information changes frequently. It’s better to talk to a live person, and write down everything that is requested. At this time you should also make an appointment with the consulate to request your passport. There will be a fee associated with you obtaining a passport. The fee is increased each year, and for 2009 the fee is $75.00 to $100 depending on the age of the person.
-
Step 3
Gather all documentation, and place them in a manila envelope or in something that you feel is durable so that the documents will be protected from environmental elements. Having everything in one place will also make obtaining the passport easier for you because you will be less likely to lose any documents.
-
Step 4
Go to your appointment, pay the appropriate fee, and turn in the documents needed for the passport. The passport may not be issued the same day; it depends on the workload of the consulate at the time you are applying. In addition, any minor child under the age of 16 years old must accompany the parent at the time of applying for the passport.
-
Step 5
Place the passport in a safe place, and when carrying it in public make sure you have it securely on your person so that it isn’t stolen. If you lose the passport you won’t be able to get a replacement right away. The consulate will request that you wait several months as an attempt to prevent immigration fraud.
