Frames for pictures or paintings are very expensive. With a little practice and some basic tools you can cut your price for custom frames in half.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Chop saw
  • Belt clamp or frame clamp
  • Wood glue
  • Router
  • Glass
  • Wooden moulding
  • Tape measure
  • Pencil
  1. Step 1

Gather up all the tools that were mentioned in the "Things You'll Need" box. Give yourself a clean area to work in. Measure out how big your picture frame needs to be, remembering to add extra length if you are going to mat around the picture.

  2. Step 2

For the wooden portion of the frame we will be using a piece of moulding bought at your local hardware store, Home Depot, or Lowes. This is a quick way to get decorative frames without having an expensive moulding machine.

  3. Step 3

Now that we have all our tools and wood for our frame, take your first piece cut a 45 degree angle on one end. From the inside of that cut measure down the wood and make a mark on the wood for the desired length of the inside of your frame. Cut your opposite 45 degree angle from that mark. Do the same for the remaining 3 pieces.

  4. Step 4

Now take all the pieces over to the router and notch out a 1/8" deep and 1/4" wide notch on the bottom inside of the wood.

  5. Step 5

Take all 4 pieces matching up patterns in the moulding, and glue all 4 pieces together.

  6. Step 6

Once the glue has dried flip over the frame and measure out the opening. That is the size of you glass.

  7. Step 7

Now apply stain if desired, then three coats of polly, sanding lightly between each coat.

  8. Step 8

When everything is dry put in your glass and picture. There are many things you can use for backing from cardboard to foam board, it is up to the maker.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure when gluing up the pieces no extra glue is left over. It will ruin your stain, and polly.
  • Check angles before gluing.
  • Please follow all safety instructions when using power tools.
