Go Green With A Central Vacuum System

If you currently own a central vacuum, you're already part of the "Green" movement. If your're currently thinking of installing a central vacuum, this article will help guide you in the right direction to be as "Green" as possible with your vac. So no matter if you have a central vacuum or are looking to put one in, this article will help.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

First you should understand that owning and using any central vacuum system is a huge step towards going green. Central vacuums last an average of 25 years. Over that same period of time you are likely to go through 5 - 10 portable vacuums, greatly increasing your impact on land fills. Central vacuums also vent 100% of contacted dirt, dust and allergens outside away from the living area for healthier living. And although all central vacuums are considered "Green", some are more green than others.

First, use a central vacuum that is "bagless". This will save you money and lessen the impact on land fills. This will also play a small role in saving trees and forest's. However, if the person who will be emptying the vacuum suffers from asthma or allergies, you should use a bag. It will not matter if the vacuum is plastic or metal as both can be recycled.

  3. Step 3

When purchasing central vacuum tools try to stick with non-electric attachments if possible. Unless you have medium to high pile carpeting, you will be able to use an "air driven" carpet head rather than electric. Same goes for homes with mostly area rugs and bare floors, no need for an electric hose.

  4. Step 4

Lastly, make sure to always empty the canister and keep the filters clean. This will assure the motor will not become overworked and will extend the motor/vacuum life.
