How to cut a copper pipe

When you are doing plumbing work being able to cut copper pipe is usually one of the first steps for most projects.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

There are two methods for cutting copper pipe, the first is to use a tube cutter. Take the pipe and place it in the tube cutter and slowly tighten down the handle until the copper pipe is sitting on the rollers and the line you wish to cut on is lined up with the cutting wheel.

  2. Step 2

Turn the tube cutter all the way around the pipe to score it. Tighten the handle slightly and turn the tube cutter the opposite direction for two turns. Tighten again, and do two more turns in the original direction. Repeat this procedure until you have cut the copper pipe.

  3. Step 3

The second method to cut copper pipe is to use a hack saw. To use this method you need a V-Block to hold the pipe.

  4. Step 4

Place the copper pipe in the V-Block and using a hacksaw cut through the pipe. Go slowly and apply very little pressure as you cut the copper pipe. If you push to hard you can bend the pipe into an oval shape, and have difficulty using it with round fittings.

  5. Step 5

Either way once you finish you should clean up the edge of your cut. Use a round file to remove any burrs on the inside or out side of the pipe. Then go over the cut end of the copper pipe with an emery cloth to help it for good connections.
