How to Make a Microwaveable Neck Pillow With Rice & Herbs

When we are stressed, often the first way it affects us physically is with a sore or stiff neck. Aromatherapy helps relieve stress, as well as sleeplessness and other negative conditions. You can easily make a microwaveable neck pillow filled with rice and herbs that will provide the aromatherapy. The rice heats up nicely in the microwave and helps to relax tired, sore neck muscles. Things You'll Need

  • Fabric, 6.5 by 9 inches
  • Old pantyhose or stocking
  • Rice
  • Herbs
  • Sewing machine and thread

Instructions

      Sew a hem with a 1/2 inch allowance on the short side of each fabric piece.

      Place the fabric pieces together right sides touching. Sew the other three sides together, leaving the hemmed side open. Turn right side out.

      Cut the bottom 10 inches of one leg of the stocking off, leaving the foot intact.

      Fill the stocking with 1 cup rice and your choice of dry herbs. Lavender and chamomile are popular choices that will aid in relaxation. Use 2 tablespoons of each herb, more if desired.

      Tie or sew the stocking top to itself and then place the stocking inside the fabric case. Distribute the rice evenly throughout the stocking. Microwave for 1 minute to release the scent.

Tips & Warnings

  • Sew a Velcro closure into the open end of your pillow. Add a few drops of aromatherapy oil to the rice. Mix different herbs in different stockings and switch them out in the cover as needed.

  • Check the temperature of the pillow before placing on your neck. The bag will be hot!
