Things You'll Need:
- Pond insert, stones or mulch, shovel, level, shop vac, sand, rope, pond fountain and extra dirt.(Fish and plants for pond as desired.)
-
Step 1
See how to build a garden if you are starting in a new undeveloped area. If not ... move onto step two.
-
Step 2
Plan the location of your pond using a rope of outline with stones. Dig a hole deep enough and wide enough for the insert to fit. hole to help Make sure you cut any roots which may get in the way. Add sand into hole to help level liner. Place insert into hole. Be sure to have any waterfall areas,(of insert) supported with enough dirt so the insert will not crack over time.
-
Step 3
Insert must lay flat on dirt for support. Push down on insert to make sure there is not any area between dirt and insert. Use a level to make sure insert is level, adjust with sand if needed.
-
Step 4
Add just about one inch of water into liner to see how it holds water. Again make sure there is no hollow area between the liner and the earth. Use the shop vac to remove the water. Set your fountain and place your hosing under the rim of your insert to the desired area of your choice. Usually the hose comes out so the water flows down the waterfall.
You are going to fill in around the pond now and there may be a lot of mulch etc... that falls back into the pond. To save yourself a lot of time cleaning the water I like to fill after the landscaping is done. -
Step 5
Lay down your ground cover and edge of pond cover. You can use stones, rocks or mulch. Be creative. I used mulch up to the edge of the pond and then I used pea gravel with larger stones on top of the gravel. Now it is time to fill the pond.
-
Step 6
Make sure the pond is clean. Do not use any chemicals they will throw off your Ph levels and also kill any fish you put in. There are may chemicals available for your pond needs. Make sure you add a chlorine eliminator before adding any fish. I recommend you stabilize the pond first then add the fish. Anything you add to the pond may throw off the Ph level. Be sure to buy a pond water testing kit to help you stabilize the water. Add plants to help also, but be sure the chemicals you add to the water will not destroy your plants.
-
Step 7
Add fish and make sure you test your water daily. In just one day you can lose all your fish. I recommend you use cheap fish first.
