Save Energy and Money in the Kitchen

Want to save money and go green in your home. These easy to follow tips will allow you to do both.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

There are lots of ways to save money and energy in your kitchen. You can even help keep you home cooler during summer and reduce your summer cooling cost. If you make a habit of implementing these few tips they will become second nature in only a short time.

  2. Step 2

Cook with cold water. Water from you hot water heater isn't considered wholesome for cooking. It also take more energy to re-heat the water used by heating in the hot water tank than it does on your stove top. Use lids on pots and pans during the summer. Foods will cook faster and you will avoid getting more moisture into the air that will have to be removed by you air conditioner.

  3. Step 3

Use a pressure cooker whenever possible, this will reduce cooking time by about three quarters. Use an electric oven or microwave for re-heating left overs or small meals and avoid using the full size over in you stove.

  4. Step 4

Defrost foods frozen items in your refrigerator for a day or two before cooking. This is like adding a free block of ice to the refrigerator. If your refrigerator has an energy saver switch turn it "OFF" This controls small electric heaters that warm the outside of the refrigerator to prevent condensation from forming around the door in humid climates. So unless you notice dampness around the door you don't need it. Always make sure you have a full load in your dishwasher before washing dishes.
