Things You'll Need:
- Grass killer, weed paper, mulch, scissors, dirt, shovel, water, rope or piece of paper to draw on and flowers or trees to be planted.
-
Step 1
The first thing you need to do before actually constructing your garden is to decide where you want the garden and what shape you want. I use a rope to lay out my gardens or if they are too big, I draw the shape out on paper first. Don't be afraid of unique shaped gardens... with arcs. Not all gardens are perfectly square or round. Also with new techniques in weed prevention, don't be afraid of going big. (Preen is a wonderful product, which helps to cut down on weeding time.)
-
Step 2
Once you have decided on the shape and size, you are now ready to begin. Spray the area with weed or grass killer. Make sure you get all areas of the garden.
-
Step 3
Cut the weed paper to completely cover the garden area. Make sure to over lap seam areas.
-
Step 4
Cover the weed paper with dirt, make sure to make the depth deep enough to secure whatever type of item you are planting, you don't want to cut too much into the weed paper. Sometimes you have to especially if you are planting trees.
-
Step 5
I like to add the mulch to the garden first before I plant my flowers, this gives me more layers to work with when planting.
If you use Preen to help prevent weeds, now is the time to place this item. I also sprinkle some on top when I am done.
Layer mulch over dirt, about 4 inches thick. -
Step 6
Plant your flowers by separating the mulch. If need be cut the weed paper and dig down to plant your item. If you are planting flowers you should not have to dig down too far... between the dirt and the mulch you should have enough room.
-
Step 7
Once all your flowers are planted sprinkle some Preen on the garden. Water your garden and enjoy. Usually during the first year you may have some grass come up through, I usually take care of this with a little grass killer. (Just be sure not to get it on your flowers) Usually by the second season your garden is ready for normal care.
