Lost your job? Changing careers? Not having luck finding a job through the classifieds? Try using an Employment Agency to help you find a job. They specialize in matching prospective employees with companies looking to fill job openings.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

CHECK the Yellow Pages, Employment Guides or the Internet for a list of Employment Agencies in your local area.

  2. Step 2

DETERMINE whether you want a permanent job or a temporary job. Many employment agencies focus either on long-term/permanent job placement or short-term/temporary job placement. Some agencies do both.

  3. Step 3

KNOW the difference between permanent and temporary job placement. If you're hired for permanent job placement, the employment agency places you with a company that hires you as full-time, regular employee.

  4. Step 4

TEMPORARY job placement places you with companies that hire you for one day to several months. Once the job is completed you get another temporary job assignment with another company.

  5. Step 5

MANY employment agencies specialize in career fields such as clerical, health care, technical, etc. Call the agency that best fits your professional experience, and setup an interview with an Employment Counselor.

  6. Step 6

GET registered with an agency. Go to the agency dressed professionally. Have your resume prepared and updated. You will fill out an application. You will likely be tested in general office and/or basic computer skills.

  7. Step 7

STAY in contact with the Employment Counselor/Recruiter. Call once a week or twice a month.

Tips & Warnings
  • It's a good idea to register with more than one Employment Agency at a time. This way you have multiple agencies working to find you employment.
  • Keep in mind that most job openings are never listed in the classifieds. And Employment Agencies have access to many of these unlisted job openings.
  • Sometimes a temporary job placement leads to a permanent job with a company.
  • Employment Agencies get paid a fee from the companies that hire you, or from a small percentage of your wage. Avoid employment agencies that charge an up-front fee to search for a job. Depending on the state, charging an up-front fee is either restricted or outlawed.

on 4/14/2009 I started my career in finance through a job found with a temp agency. Sure I spent a couple of weeks putting files in drawers, but I consider it a very long interview. They saw how I worked, and then offered me the job. Great advice.
