How to Install an Electric Smoke Detector
Smoke detectors first became available for home use in 1969, and today they are present in 75 to 85 percent of American homes. House fire deaths have decreased by half since the late 1970s, largely due to early warnings from smoke alarms. Hard-wired detectors should only be installed by a certified electrician or contractor, but anyone can install a battery-powered unit in just a few minutes. Choose a location for the smoke detector. The U.S. Fire Administration recommends putting one on every level of your home, including the basement. If you're installing only one, put it near the bedrooms of your home.

Select a position on the wall or ceiling at least 5 inches from the edge. If you're mounting the alarm on an irregular or sloped ceiling, choose the highest point.

Use the bracket as a template and mark on the ceiling or wall where the screw holes will be. Drill through the marks with a 1/8-inch bit. Attach the bracket to the surface with the screws provided with the smoke detector.

Install the batteries, either in the back or from inside the smoke alarm. Clip or slide the smoke alarm into the bracket.

Test the detector by depressing the "test" button. It should sound loudly within 3 seconds.

Tips & Warnings
Test your smoke detector once a month. Change the batteries annually, or as recommended by the manufacturer.

good info, but does not answer specific issues of installing hardwired smoke detectors. Referring to 'qualified electrician' does not help.
