A tomato rose is a simple way to add eye appeal.

A rose garnish is a nice touch that makes food more attractive. Made from the peel of a tomato, it is a good way to use scraps that would otherwise be thrown away. With a little practice, you will be able to make these roses anytime you are using tomatoes. For large platters, arrange the tomatoes on the edges in groups of three. Does this Spark an idea?

  • Sharp paring knife
  • Medium tomato
  • Basil or mint leaf, optional

Instructions

      Wash a bright-red tomato with unbroken skin for each tomato rose.

      Peel the tomato thinly with a sharp knife, starting at the top of the tomato and proceeding around the tomato in a continuous circle. Peel the tomato in one long strip, approximately 3/4 inch wide.

      Stretch the peel out on a cutting board, peel side down. Roll the peel tightly to start, loosening the roll as you go.

      Place the tomato roll on the plate, standing it on one cut edge. Loosen the rose and arrange it to form a pleasing rose design. Add a basil leaf or mint leaf to further enhance the design.
