The golf grip is attached to the top of the shaft of the golf club. There will be a name or a logo or both on the front of the grip. There will also be two small alignment markers. One alignment marker will be located above the name or logo at the top of the grip. The other one will be located below the name or logo at the bottom of the grip. Alignment markers can vary in appearance.
Examples:
Small indentions grooved into the rubber of the grip
Small markings stamped onto the rubber of the grip

The manufacturer has already identified the proper location for the alignment markers. When you replace the grip, the markings on your new grip should be placed in the the same place as the original markers.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Golf Club
  • Double sided tape (from golf store)
  • New Grip
  • Regular utility knife for non-graphite clubs
  • Specialized hook blade for graphite clubs
  • Grip solvent
  • One golf tee
  • Paint pan
  • 1 - 2 Utility cloths
  • Soap and water
  • Ventilated indoor work area.
  • Or work outside
  • Utility table
  • Masking tape and dark colored magic marker
  • Vice grip - optional
  • Rubber clamp - optional
  1. Step 1

Find a suitable work area. If you work inside make sure the area is well ventilated because grip solvents are flammable and some have strong odors. Otherwise, set up your work area and utility table outside. Whether inside or outside, keep solvents away from flames and away from children. Follow safety instructions on the bottle.

  2. Step 2

Clean the shaft before you replace the grip. Cut a strip of masking tape about an inch wide. Securely tape it around the shaft about an inch below the alignment marker at the bottom of the grip. With the magic marker, make a mark on the tape that aligns with the marker at the bottom of the grip. The mark on the tape will help you to properly align the markers on the new grip correctly.

  3. Step 3

Use the appropriate utility knife to remove the old grip from the club shaft.
Metal Shaft – Use a regular utility knife.
Graphite Shaft – Use a special graphite hook blade which can be attached to a regular utility knife. Purchase the special graphite hook blade from a golf store. A regular utility knife can mar the graphite material, but this special blade protects it.

To remove the grip, make a full cut from the bottom of the grip to the top of the grip. Peel the grip off of the shaft. Always cut away from your body, being careful also of your hands and fingers.

There will be old double sided tape on the golf shaft underneath the old grip. You can leave the old tape or remove it.

  4. Step 4

Re-wrap that same taped area with the new double sided tape. You can use a spiral wrap or you can cut vertical strips and tape them to the area.

  5. Step 5

Do this next step over the paint tray. Insert the golf tee into the hole at the top of the new golf trip. Pour enough solvent into the other end of the new golf grip to completely coat the inside. Pour any excess solvent over the newly re-taped shaft. But only pour it over the taped part of the shaft. The entire taped part of the shaft should be covered. The solvent will lubricate both the taped part of the shaft and the inside of the grip. Slide the shaft into the new golf grip. Make sure the alignment markers are aligned properly.

  6. Step 6

Remove the golf tee. Remove the masking tape. Use soap, water and a clean utility cloth to clean any debris left from the process. Use a clean, dry utility cloth to dry the golf club. Make sure to leave the alignment markers in place and undisturbed.

  7. Step 7

Allow the golf club to set for 24 hours before use.

  8. Step 8

Repeat this process to replace any golf grip.

Tips & Warnings
  • Sometimes a vice grip is used to hold the shaft in place, while replacing the grip. If you use a grip, put a rubber clamp on the shaft first to protect it. Then attach the vice grip to the club with the rubber clamp for protection. These clamps are used for this procedure and can be purchased at a golf store. Always cut away from your body and be careful of your hands and fingers.
  • The golf grip for the putter is different from the other grips and especially made for the putter.
  • Call your local golf store and ask how much they charge to replace golf grips. By doing this you can determine how much money you will save by replacing the grips yourself. Make sure you account for the cost of any supplies you purchase to determine accurate savings.
