How to Square up Artwork in Photoshop

Photographing 2 dimensional artwork with a digital camera can produce images that are not square. Here is a way to square up the artwork without cropping any of the image.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Photoshop software-full version
  • computer
  • digital photos of artwork
  1. Step 1
     

    Open the image in Photoshop.

  2. Step 2
    Using the Move Tool
     
    Using the Move Tool

    Use the move tool to drag out the guides from the rulers and place the at the outermost edge of the artwork on all four sides.

  3. Step 3

    Use the cropping tool and draw a cropping marquee on the guides.

  4. Step 4
    Crop the Image
     
    Crop the Image

    Crop the image. Go to Image - Crop.

  5. Step 5
    Enlarge the window
     
    Enlarge the window

    Drag out the lower right corner to enlarge the window so you can see the edges of the image.

  6. Step 6
    View - Clear Guides
     
    View - Clear Guides

    Use the move tool to remove the guides by dragging them back into the rulers. Or go to View - Clear Guides.

  7. Step 7

    Use the selection tool and select the whole image. Or go to Select - All.

  8. Step 8
    Use the Warp Tool
     
    Use the Warp Tool

    Select the Warp tool under Edit - Transform - Warp. The image must be selected or this tool will be grayed out.

  9. Step 9
    Pull on the Anchors
     
    Pull on the Anchors

    Pull the anchors out to stretch the image until it reaches the borders on all sides.

    Apply the transformation
     
    Apply the transformation

    Apply the transformation by clicking on any tool in the toolbar. Click Apply. If the image still has background showing around the image do the process again.

    Delete the Selection
     
    Delete the Selection

    Delete the selection under Select - Deselect. The borders of your image should look very clean.

  12. Step 12
    Save the image
     
    Save the image

    Save your Squared image.

Tips & Warnings
  • If rulers are not displayed, go to View - Rulers.
  • Remember if you do not Select the image, the Warp tool will be dimmed.
