How to Pay IRS Taxes Online Or By Phone

The Internal Revenue Service's Electronic Federal Tax Payment System allows you to pay your taxes online or by telephone. Both individuals and businesses can use EFTPS to pay taxes, and both the online and telephone system are secure. Individual taxpayers can schedule future tax payments up to 365 days in advance.

Instructions

      Go to the EFTPS homepage (see Resources).

      Click the "Enrollment" tab.

      Accept the terms and conditions of the service and select either the "Business" or "Individual" button.

      Enter your Social Security number or taxpayer ID number, your name or the name of your business, your phone number, your address information and your bank account number and routing number. Click the "Review" button.

      Click the "Confirm" button to submit your registration to the IRS.

      Wait five to seven days to receive your PIN and password in the mail from the IRS.

      Click the "Payments" tab and enter your taxpayer ID or Social Security number. Click the "Login" button. Enter your payment amount and payment date. Confirm your information and click the "Submit" button. Alternatively, you can make a telephone payment by calling the EFTPS voice response system at 800-555-3453.

Tips & Warnings

  • Payments made by 8 p.m. Eastern Standard Time will post to your IRS account the following business day.
