Whether you are contemplating law school, a career as a paralegal, or just want a job where you do not have to sell a product, getting an entry level job in a law firm will benefit you.

Law firms hire entry level workers as couriers, receptionists, records clerks, library clerks, billing clerks, document clerks, and legal assistants. No matter which position you land, you will gain valuable experience in the legal field.

Think about why you want to work in a law firm. Even if you are still exploring possible career paths, detailing how working at a law firm fits into your 5 year plan will help your potential employer see you as a good fit.

  2. Step 2

Tailor your resume to highlight your communication and computer skills. It will be easier for you to adapt to computer programs used by the law firm if you are comfortable using word processing, spreadsheet, and e-mail software. Take college courses in accounting, business, technical writing, and typing to improve your office skills.

Pursue multiple avenues for landing an interview. Search proactively instead of waiting for jobs to be published in newspapers and employment websites.

    a. Join a legal staffing agency. Many law firms pay these specialized agencies to recruit new employees.

    b. Contact local law firms to express interest in temporary summer positions. Temporary opportunities often lead to permanent employment.

    c. Review job postings on college career center websites where companies are seeking fresh graduates.

  4. Step 4

Be positive while you wait for a potential employer to call you for an interview. Tell family, friends, and acquaintances about your goal to work in a law firm. A potential job opportunity can come through any vehicle.

  5. Step 5

Getting an interview is the hard part. Once you land an interview, remember to dress professionally, smile and be articulate. Express confidence and enthusiasm. Listen attentively to show your interest.

Tips & Warnings
  • While college degrees in business, political science, and English may be preferred, earning a degree in any subject will help you advance quickly.
  • View a temporary job as an opportunity to learn as well as demonstrate your empoyability.
  • Entry level jobs can be monotonous, but are a worthwhile investment.
