Wouldn't it be great to save money and the environment all before you have your first cup of coffee? Here are a few tips to help you go green with your morning coffee.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Automatic coffee maker
  • Reusable coffee filter
  • Toothbrush
  1. Step 1
8-12 cup permanent gold tone filter
8-12 cup permanent gold tone filter

Check your current coffeemaker's basket. Many coffeemakers already come with a reusable basket such as the Hamilton Beach Brewstation Deluxe. If your coffeemaker has a reusable basket, there is no need to use paper filters.

  2. Step 2

If your coffee maker does not have a permanent or reusable filter, there are many available online. In lieu of purchasing a new coffee maker, search your manufacturer's website for a reusable filter. If the manufacturer does not offer this product, there are many universal types of filters available online for different machines.

  3. Step 3

Once you have a reusable filter, put the coffee grounds to good use. Instead of putting the grounds in the trash, wait for them to cool and use them as fertilizer on you indoor and outdoor plants. Simply spread the grounds around the base of your plants or trees for a green fertilizer that plants love!

  4. Step 4

Rinse your coffee filter in water after each use.

  5. Step 5

Use a toothbrush to remove any accumulated grounds in your filter.

  6. Step 6

Depending on the type of coffee you buy, the containers are great for multiple uses. The plastic type with tight fitting lids can be reused are great for storing small amounts of paint. The lid keeps the paint fresh and the containers are easy to hold when doing touch up projects.

  7. Step 7

Metal containers can be used as pans in the oven. A great recipe for bread can be found at: http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Hobo-Bread/Detail.aspx

Tips & Warnings
  • The coffee filter is easier to clean once the grounds are dry.
  • Running vinegar through your coffee maker to clean it is great for the reusable filter.
  • Check your coffee maker's manual on special cleaning instructions.
