How to Clean Jacuzzi Tubs
Jacuzzis are relaxing and invigorating at the same time. They offer a myriad of health benefits due to the warm water lowering your blood pressure and the jets massaging your muscles. Cleaning them can be tricky but there are easy ways to circumvent common cleaning issues, particularly the hose systems. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Soft scrub or Ajax
- Clorox (or generic) bleach
- A sponge with a soft abrasive side

Like any tub a Jacuzzi is prone to lime scale buildup and soap scum if you use soap or bubbles of any kind. The measures to clean the superficial areas of the Jacuzzi are similar to that of any tub and dependent on the actual constitution of the Jacuzzi. As some are made of acrylic and other are made from fiberglass and still others are made of stone or other material (in some parts of the world or hotels for example) you must first determine the surface. Do NOT use an abrasive cleanser on a fiberglass unit for example. In these cases you will want something that eats away at the scum such as a soap scum cleanser and a soft sponges. You can also use glass cleaner for a polished finish.
For those more "rugged" surfaces you can use Ajax or Soft Scrub and a rough end of a sponge, but always follow manufacturers instructions as each finish is different and some do not take well to scrubbing and can "cloud" or scratch permanently.
The first step though should be to thoroughly cleanse the surface of the tub.

The "jets" which are the actual spouts the water is forced out of often get a mold or mildew buildup around them. For these I spray some bleach around them. Bleach kills both mold and mildew and also is very good in killing any bacteria which is vital to the cleanliness of any Jacuzzi. For jets that are setback or have grooves you may want to get a cotton swab (Q-tip) and really get in there. An old toothbrush with soft bristles will also do the job quite well.

Finally you need to think about the entire system. Clearly the system has hoses that run throughout by sucking water in through one central suction and then forcing it through the motor system out through the jets. There is therefore always water left over somewhere within the system and as with any dark, damp enclosure this is a breeding ground for bacteria, the one thing that Jacuzzis are renowned for and the reason most hotel Jacuzzis use chlorine bleach much like in a swimming pool.
For home Jacuzzis the remedy is very easy. Add enough water to cover the jets. After you have done that take a gallon of bleach, I prefer Clorox only because the quality can be assured, and then run your Jacuzzi for about 15 minutes. Drain completely and you now have a clean Jacuzzi!
