Things You'll Need:
- A shopping book
- notebook
- pen
- scissors
- coupons
-
Step 1
Make a shopping list. Before heading out to the supermarket to buy your groceries make a list of exactly what you need. Plan your meals for the week, thinking about making dinners that are inexpensive to make, but are still healthy. Planning your meals out ahead of time can save you money on food.
-
Step 2
Stick to your list. Once you are in the supermarket don't stray from your shopping list. We all know this can be hard sometimes and we can be easily tempted. You could consider adding to your list 1 treat. This can be any treat that you don't need to plan in advance for. The only restriction you should add is that it must be below as certain price. By sticking to your list you can save money on your groceries by avoiding impulse purchases.
-
Step 3
Be open minded. When buying groceries don't always stick to the same brand each week. Looks for items that are on sale and try those. The more sale items you buy each week the more you can save on your grocery shopping. Be careful though. Don't automatically throw something into your shopping basket because it is on sale. Make sure it is actually good value compared to other similar products.
-
Step 4
Consider stores brands. Store brand food and products are usually cheaper than other supermarket products and are just or nearly as good. Try them out and see which ones you like, you may be surprised.
-
Step 5
Consider making some things at home. One food product that you can make at home and save money on is bread. Making bread is pretty easy and even easier if you invest in a bread maker. You can make a batch of bread and then freeze it. Not only will this help reduce your grocery bill, the homemade bread is probably healthier than the bread you would buy at the supermarket.
-
Step 6
Stock up. There are many products you can buy at the supermarket that will keep for a long time, such as soda. When your favorite soda is on sale stock up on it. Since soda can be expensive you could also try and reduce how much you drink and try drinking more water. This will not only save you money on groceries it will be better for your health.
-
Step 7
Use coupons. Cutting out coupons each week can be difficult if you are busy, but it is worth it. Try doing it while your favorite TV show is on. You were going to watch the show anyway so why not make your time more efficient. Put your coupons in a coupon book as you cut them, so they stay organized. There is no point in having a big pile of coupons and not knowing what is there. Organize your coupon book into sections such as, meat, toiletries, breads/creals, pasta, cleaning, soup, drinks, etc.
-
Step 8
Leave the kids at home. This may not always be possible, but try to leave the kids at home when you go grocery shopping. Kids may tempt you to stray from your shopping list, as they will see things they think they must have and cause you to make an impulse food purchase and thus reducing how much you save on your groceries.
