How to Make Stamp Pad Ink

Making stamp pad ink can be as easy or as complicated as you like. Ink has been made for millennia and has been used to write or draw on mediums from papyrus to parchment to paper. Many of the recipes for ink involve creating great quantities, the ingredients are becoming more difficult to obtain, and the time and effort involved is substantial. Below are several ink mixtures that you can make with relative ease to refill your stamp pad.

Things You'll Need:

  • Powdered clothes dye (colors of your choice – grocery store)
  • Alcohol
  • Glycerin (drugstore or online)
  • OR
  • Egg yolk
  • Gum Arabic (art supply store)
  • Honey
  • Lamp black (art supply store)
  • EXTRAS
  • Vinegar
  • Laundry bluing (grocery store

    CLOTHES DYE INK
    Mix enough powdered clothes dye (any color) with 1/4 teaspoon alcohol until it resembles thin cream. Add 5 tablespoons glycerin and stir until thoroughly mixed. Pour ink over used up stamp pad. Keep the box tightly covered when not in use.

    LAMP BLACK INK
    Mix 1 egg yolk, 1 teaspoon gum arabic, and 1/2 cup honey in a small bowl. Add 1/2 teaspoon lamp black to make a thick paste. Store in a jar. To use, mix a small amount of the paste with a little water to make a fluid. Carefully pour onto stamp pad. Keep the box tightly covered when not in use.

    PRUSSIAN BLUE INK
    Dissolve small amount of Prussian Blue laundry bluing in water. Carefully pour onto stamp pad. Keep the box tightly covered when not in use.

Tips & Warnings
  • Lamp black can be purchased or can be made by holding a plate over a lit candle
  • Vinegar can be substituted for water in any of these mixtures to avoid diluting the color of the ink
