Traveling to and from Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts can be a challenge. After all, it is an island and for years it's been the hideout perfect hideaway for the rich and famous. By being aware of a few simple steps, you can travel to and from the Vineyard with relative ease.

You can travel to Martha's Vineyard in one of two ways: by air, or by sea. There is no land bridge.

    BY AIR
Book a flight to Boston Logan airport or TF Green airport in Warwick, Rhode Island. From either of these airports, you can connect to a Cape Air flight to the Martha's Vineyard airport on a Cessna prop plane. Once you have arrived at the airport on Martha's Vineyard, you can rent a car, take a taxi, or public bus to your destination. To travel back to the mainland, reverse the process.

    BY SEA
If you wish to take a ferry to Martha's Vineyard, you can begin your trip from Woods Hole, MA or (during the summer) from Quonset Point, RI or from New Bedford, MA. The ferry from Woods Hole costs $7.50 for a one-way adult ticket and takes about 45 minutes. The ferry from New Bedford costs $35 for a one-way adult ticket and takes about an hour. The ferry from Quonset Point costs $49 for a one-way adult ticket and takes about 95 minutes.

Driving to Woods Hole to catch the ferry
    From Boston to Woods Hole:
Take the Southeast Expressway - Route 93 South to fork at end. Bear right, staying on Route 93 South toward Route 95. Stay on the left, as you will soon come to Exit 4. Bear left, heading toward Brockton, Fall River. Continue to Route 495 South and exit on the right toward Cape Cod. Continue over the Cape Cod Canal on the Bourne Bridge and follow Route 28 to Woods Hole.

From the Northern and Western Suburbs of Boston to Woods Hole:
Take Interstate 95 South (also known in Massachusetts as Route 128) to Interstate 93 North toward Braintree/Cape Cod. After you leave Interstate 95, get in the right lane. Take Exit 4 toward Brockton, Fall River. Continue to Route 495 South and exit on the right toward Cape Cod. Continue over the Cape Cod Canal on the Bourne Bridge and follow Route 28 to Woods Hole.

From New York, Connecticut and Rhode Island to Woods Hole:
Take Interstate 95 North to Providence, Rhode Island. Then, follow the Cape Cod indicators to Interstate 195. At the end, take a right onto Route 25 East to Cape Cod. Cross over the Cape Cod Canal on the Bourne Bridge and follow Route 28 to Woods Hole.

    Some Driving Distances
Woods Hole to Falmouth Center: 4 miles
Woods Hole to Hyannis: 26 miles, 45 minutes
Woods Hole to Boston: 75 miles
Woods Hole to Providence: 70 miles
Woods Hole to Bourne Bridge: 20 miles, 30 minutes

It's best not to take your car to the Vineyard, but if you choose to, make your reservations with the Steamship Authority ferry early. There are limited spots onboard.

  5. Step 5

By Train/Bus - Take an Amtrak train to Boston South Station. You can make a connection in South Station between Amtrak and Peter Pan bus lines, but leave yourself a 30-minute window to make sure you don't miss your connection. Buy a bus ticket online in advance, or in person at the ticket window in South Station to Woods Hole ($26 one way). The trip will take you approximately 2 hours.
