Instructions

    • 1

Wash and dry the drinking glass you have selected to give as a gift. Choose from a shot glass, wine glass, martini glass, beer mug, goblet, or toasting flute.

    • 2

Draw a design template with a pencil on a white piece of paper. Write your child's name, initials, "Happy 21st Birthday" or an appropriate design like his favorite sports team logo.

    • 3

Tape your design template inside the drinking glass so that the design can be seen through the glass. Place it behind the exact location you wish to etch the design.

    • 4

Tie a handkerchief around your face so that it protects your nose and mouth from any dust particles that may result from the etching process.

    • 5

Apply your diamond-tipped glass engraver to the drinking glass directly on top of the lines of your design template. Trace each part of the design without applying too much pressure. Find your diamond-tipped glass engraving tool at a craft store like Dick Blick (dickblick.com), or search for the tool on a website like Amazon.com.

    • 6

Remove the template design from the inside of your drinking glass.

    • 7

Retrace over your initial glass etching with the engraver to reinforce the design.

    • 8

Wipe off the drinking glass with a wet washcloth to brush away any glass particles. Repeat these steps to make a matching glass or trace a new design.
