Scan for Viruses Online for Free

There are many sites online where you can scan your computer for viruses for free. Many of these virus scanners do a better job of finding threats than most free desktop anti-virus software programs. While an online virus scanner can't remove viruses from your computer, it can give you a clear idea where threats exist. Many free online virus scanners can also find adware and spyware that's on your computer. It's best to use only the online virus scanners provided by the top anti-virus software manufacturers.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Ensure that you have Internet Explorer 6 or later installed on your computer. Also make sure that you have the latest version of Java installed.

  2. Step 2

Navigate to the Kaspersky online virus scanner. Click "Scan Now." Read the information provided in the new window and click "Accept" if you choose to continue. Click "Run" if prompted to do so. Wait while the virus scanning software downloads to your computer. If you have run the Kaspersky virus scanner before, wait for the software to update. When the download is finished, disable any desktop anti-virus software you have installed and click "My Computer" under the "Scan" menu.

  3. Step 3

Browse to the Symantec Security online virus scanner. Click the start button under "Virus Detection." Read and accept the license agreement. Install the ActiveX control when prompted. The scan will begin automatically when the software has installed. Check the virus scan window later to see how many files the Symantec software scanned and whether or not it found any viruses.

  4. Step 4

Go to the Trend Micro HouseCall online virus scanner. Open the terms of use in a separate browser window and read them. Click the check box beside "Yes, I accept the Terms of Use" and click "Launch HouseCall." Select either the Java version or the browser plug-in version of Trend Micro HouseCall's free online virus scan. Install the ActiveX control if prompted to do so. Click "Scan complete computer for malware, greyware and vulnerabilities."

  5. Step 5

When the results of your online virus scans are complete, save them to your hard drive or write them down. Be sure to make a note of the folders where the software found viruses and other threats on your computer. Navigate to the folders and delete the infected files manually.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use a free desktop anti-virus software such as Avast! or AVG to keep your computer protected from viruses. You can also use these free anti-virus programs to scan your computer, but keep in mind that there are many threats they may miss.
