Things You'll Need:
- Small plastic sandwich bags
- Small plastic storage boxes
- Computer & Printer (Optional)
- Clear Tape
-
Step 1
Get Small Storage Boxes for Each Set~ Buy a Plastic Storage Box When Buying Lego Sets ~
The first step to organizing Legos is to pick up a small plastic storage box when you buy a new set. You'll want to choose one that is large enough to hold the entire set that you've bought, but small enough that you aren't wasting space. If you purchase a large set that has numerous different items in it, consider buying a storage box for each large item the set will make. -
Step 2
~ Add Legos to the Box ~
As soon as you open the new set of Legos, place all of the pieces that go with one set into the plastic storage box that you just purchased. -
Step 3
Put Instructions in Small Baggie~ Put Directions into Small Plastic Baggie ~
You'll also want to keep the instructions handy so that your child can refer back to them when building their set for the second (or tenth!) time. Just place them in a small baggie and label it with the name of the set that it belongs to. You can either set it in the storage box or tape it to the inside cover of the box. -
Step 4
~ Add a Label to Your Box ~
The next step in organizing Legos is making sure that each box is labeled so that your child can quickly find the set that he's looking for. Use a label with a photo of the item that's in the box. You can either cut out the photo from the front of the box, or you can do a quick internet search for the items and print a picture to be taped on the outside of the box. Using packing tape to do this so that your label doesn't come off. -
Step 5
~ Give Your Child One Box at a Time ~
Now this may be the most difficult part, but you'll want to encourage your child to only put together and take apart one set of Legos at a time so that they don't get mixed up during play. They can play with more than one set at a time, but it will be easier to keep the legos organized if they only put together the contents of one box at a time. And if they don't, at least you tried!

on 4/24/2009 Great advice! My grandson keeps me busy looking for certain pieces like a 2 x 2 with a little do-hicky on it to connect to some other little piece. Great tips!
