Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Natural Oils
  1. Step 1

A hot oil a treatment is the use of natural oils to moisturize and prevent damage in all types of hair. This type of treatment is especially necessarily for African American hair. It replenishes proteins and minerals loss due to the use of heated tools, relaxing, coloring or other chemical processes. Hot oil treatments should be done at least once a month, preferably on dry hair.

  2. Step 2

You can simply use any of your favorite oils to mix together and use as a hot oil treatment. Olive oil is very popular oil for doing a hot oil treatment. You can use this oil alone as a hot oil treatment. Another oil that can be used alone is Coconut oil. Both these oils are great moisturizers and add strength and shine to the hair. Jojoba oil can also be used in the mixture. It replaces protein and moisturizes the hair. Some other oils include, castor oil, which is known to aid in hair thickening, grapeseed oil, avocado oil, which hydrates, tea tree oil, which aids in dry itchy scalp, and or sweet almond oil. You can mix any or all of these oils together in small amounts, and place them in an applicator bottle.

  3. Step 3

Apply the hot oil directly to your scalp using the tip of the applicator bottle. Massage the oil thoroughly through your scalp using the pads of your finger tips. Now apply the oil to the entire hair shaft. Be sure the oil is evenly distributed and an ample amount is applied to the ends.

  4. Step 4

Place a plastic cap on your head and sit under a hooded dryer for 15-20 minutes. If you do not have a hooded dryer you can moisten a towel and warm it in the microwave. Another alternative would be to place the applicator bottle with the mixture of oils into the microwave and heat it up for about 30 seconds, apply to your hair and scalp and leave on for 15 minutes.

  5. Step 5

Be sure to wash your hair to remove all of the oil using warm water. Shampoo as normal and proceed to style.

Tips & Warnings
  • Allow oil to cool if too hot, before applying to your hair

on 9/6/2009 This is a very good article, but one question; if you shampoo after the hot oil treatment will not not remove all the nutrients from the oils that you just put into your hair?
I bought a bottle of carrot oil and Africas best herbal oil (a mixture of many essential oils) they both recommend that you rinse the oil out not shampoo?
Just want to know which way is best? Thanks much!
