Things You'll Need:
- two small sponges
- 1 bar of saddle soap
- 1 small bucket of fresh water
- 1 small bucket of water to use with the soapy sponge (only if necessary
- 1 clean dry towel
-
Step 1
Place your saddle on a saddle rack and set up all of the necessary supplies, as indicated in the what you need section of this article. Remove the stirrups from your saddle.
-
Step 2
Wet your saddle. Use one sponge and one bucket of water purely for wetting your saddle. Wet the sponge and wipe it over the top side of one side of your saddle. Don't soak your saddle, but don't skimp on the water either.
-
Step 3
Rub saddle soap onto your dry sponge. Using the other sponge rub it hard on the bar of saddle soap so that you have a good soap residue on the sponge. Don't wet the sponge and it should not be full of suds. Start cleaning the section of the saddle that you wet by working the sponge in circular motion. Make sure you clean under the flap in the stirrup attachment area. Use the second water bowl to add a little more water, but only if necessary and do it sparingly. Your sponge or saddle should not have many, if any suds on it.
-
Step 4
Wipe your saddle with a clean dry towel. When you have finished cleaning one section of your saddle use a clean dry towel on it to dry it off.
-
Step 5
Repeat the above steps on underneath your saddle flap on the side you just cleaned, both parts on the other side of your saddle and the top of your saddle.
-
Step 6
Carry out the same process to clean your stirrup leathers and then place your stirrups back on your saddle.
