If you are visiting a French speaking country or the popular tourist destination of Paris then you will probably want to know how to buy a ticket in French. A great way to get around Paris is by using the Metro and buying a ticket in French is easy with a little simple preparation.

  • French dictionary
  • French phrase book
  1. Step 1

    Learn some French words that you will need to buy a ticket in French. Words that you should learn are: le billet (luh beeyeah), ticket; l'aller (lallay), one-way; le retour (luh retoor), return; aller-retour (allay-retoor), round trip; l'horaire (lorair), schedule; la gare (lah gahr), station; le guichet (luh geeshay), ticket window; and le train (luh tran), train.

  2. Step 2

    Learn the complete French phrase for buying a ticket in French. If you go to a train or bus station in France and would like a ticket to a specific location say: Je voudrais un billet pour ... (insert location here) (jze voodray a-n beeyeah poor ...).

  3. Step 3

    Learn French words relate to the station. Some important helpful French words are: descendre (desso-ndr), get off; changer (sho-njzy), to change; le départ (luh daypar), departure, l'arret (larray), stop; la destination (lah desteenahseeyoh-n), destination, sortie (sortee), exit; and l'arrivée (lareevay) arrival.

  4. Step 4

    Learn how to ask how much a ticket is in French. You may want to ask the ticket window assistant how much a ticket costs in French. To ask this say: combien un billet pour ... (insert destination here).

Tips & Warnings
  • When in a French metro station ask or look for a pocket sized metro map. This will contain color coded lines indicating which line various stops on are on. It can also help you know where you are while riding on the metro.
  • Look for a help desk. In big tourist cities like Paris there will often be a tourist help desk that will be able to help you buy a ticket in English.
  • Always try to speak French first, even if your French is not very good.
