If you are planning a trip to France it is a good idea to be able to speak some basic French. Try to learn some common questions and phrases so you can find your way around. The French will appreciate that you at least try to speak French, even if it is bad French, than no French at all. Being able to ask directions in French can make your trip less stressful.

  1. Step 1

    Learn some basic French words. In order to ask for directions in French and understand the answer you will need to know a few French words, how they are pronounced and how they sound. Some good words to know are: descendre (desso-ndr), meaning to get off; à gauche means go left, à droite means go right and tout droit means straight ahead.

  2. Step 2

    Learn complete French phrases that will help you get around. Some common French questions are: Où pourrais-je trouver un taxi (oow poorrayjze troovay a-n taxi? (where can I find a taxi?); Où est-ce que je dois descendre (oow eskuh jze dwa desso-ndr)? (where should I get off?); Quel bus va aux Eiffel Tower (or other location) (what bus goes to the ...? and Où est la gare ..(insert train station here)? Where is the ... train station. To ask where something is say Je cherch ... (insert place here) (jze shairsh...), meaning I am looking for... Or ask Où se trouve ... (insert place here), (oow suh troov), meaning Where can I find...

  3. Step 3

    Always say please and thank in French. When in France you will notice that it is important to say please and thank you, so make sure you know how to say it and always say please at the end of your French question and thank you after the person has answered your question. S'il vous plait (please). Merci (thank you.)

Tips & Warnings
  • Get a small French phrase book that you can keep in your pocket or bag and carry it with you. These phrase books will contain a number of common questions and phrases in French that will help you get around. Make sure you get a French phrase book that has phonetic spelling along with the French spelling so you can pronounce the words correctly.
  • Learn some basic French words so you can understand the answers to your questions. Words to learn include left, right, straight ahead, turn, get off, and walk.
  • In France it is always better to try and speak French no matter how bad it is, than assuming a person speaks English. You will always get a more friendly reaction than if you just start speaking English to someone.
