The day will come when we all leave our parents home and venture out on our own. In many cases an apartment is the best choice for those just starting out. Many times a person will look for a roommate to share expenses. It may not be a wise choice to move in with a close friend or family member. Sometimes living with someone we are close to can eventually place a strain on the relationship.

  2. Step 2
    Reference check by phone.

Ways to search for a roommate are through the Internet, Newspaper, by word of mouth, and referrals. Depending on the type of response that you receive, you should begin scheduling interviews with the prospective client. It is best to meet the person in public place such as restaurant, coffee shop etc. First, make sure you have a pad of paper and a pen to write things down. Make sure your questions are firm and direct, try to stay away from asking questions that may seem too personal.

  3. Step 3
    Apartment room key.

You have the right to request references and proof of income from the renter/ roommate. Make certain you make it clear that the person will be responsible for 50% of the monthly expenses not including food. You might want to jot down a few important things associated with sharing the apartment. It needs to be made quite clear to the potential roommate that the rent is due on a specific day every month and must be paid. In addition, apartment houses always have a book which contains bi-laws and rules governing apartment rental in a particular state.

  4. Step 4
    Interviewing potential roomate.

While interviewing the potential roommate, if he or she is evasive about answering certain questions, then this should put up a red flag and this person probably is not suitable roommate.
