Things You'll Need:
- Wire hanging basket.
- Long cut peat moss.
- All purpose planting mix.
- Slow release fertilizer.
- Assortment of trailing flowers and foliage plants.
-
Step 1
Various textures and colorsGo to your local nursery and buy a wire hanging basket, a bag of long cut peat moss, a bag of all purpose planting mix, slow release fertilizer, and an assortment of trailing flowers and foliage plants. Try to get varying textures and complimentary colors when you are choosing your plants.
Some good plant choices are Trailing Verbena, Calibrochoa, Trailing rosemary, and African daisies. -
Step 2
Moss basketNow that you have all of your materials to make your hanging basket get a bucket of water and soak your peat moss for about 2 minutes. Now add the peat moss to your basket by tamping it down nice and firm. Make sure it is nice and thick so it will hold the soil and the moisture when you go to plant.
-
Step 3
Add some all purpose planting mix to your basket. Now is also a good time to add a slow release fertilizer just mix it in with the soil. Do not fill the hanging basket all the way to the top.
-
Step 4
Plantin your hanging basketAdd plants to the hanging basket and give the root ball a squeeze to help separate the roots. This will help the roots establish in the hanging basket. When your basket looks full add some planting mix by sprinkling it around the plants. Shake the hanging basket to settle the soil around the roots. And you’re almost done.
-
Step 5
Beautiful Hanging BasketNow you have a good looking hanging moss basket that you can hang on the porch or the side of the house. Now all you have to do is water it, congratulations. Now you will have a beautiful hanging basket, full of color that will last all season long.

on 4/12/2009 Thanks for the article on how to make a hanging basket. It sounds better than buying them: cheaper, and more to your own taste. One tip I would like to add: hanging baskets dry out faster than flowers in pots or in the ground. Be sure to water more frequently than you normally would.
