Today, the term "memory" is easily confused with the term, "storage". Memory is the temporary data stored on your RAM (Random Access Memory), and some people do not know how to check the amount of memory that their computer has. RAM is useful for speeding up your computer, whether it is just for gaming or everyday use. This article will teach you how to check how much RAM your computer carries, check what type of RAM your motherboard supports, and find information about your hard drive (or storage).

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Windows Vista / XP
  • or Windows 7
  • Basic computer usage knowledge.
  • About 10 minutes max
  1. Step 1

First, you'll want to click the start menu.

  2. Step 2

Then, go to "All Programs", after which a list will appear.

  3. Step 3

Towards the top of the list, you will see the folder "Acessories". Click it to go in.

  4. Step 4

In the "Accessories" folder there is yet another folder called "System Tools". Click that one as well.

  5. Step 5

Within the "System Tools" folder there is a program called "System Information". Click it to enter.

  6. Step 6

After this, a window will pop up. It may take a minute, but you will soon see the basic information about your computer. In this list you will find the amount of memory (RAM) that your computer holds currently.
After scrolling down the list, the section labeled "Installed Physical Memory" will display your RAM.

  7. Step 7

For those who were looking for the amount of space remaining of your hard drive, simply open "My computer" or "Computer" and you will see the "C:" drive. The amount of space here is the amount left for you to use. To see a graph of this, right click the C drive and click "Properties".

Tips & Warnings
  • If you were looking for more information about the RAM and the type of RAM you have, I recommend downloading CPU-Z here:
  • NOTE: The download will start as soon as you click the link. By the way, you will have to copy and paste this into your browser.
  • This will give you a detailed description of your computer's components.
  • Sometimes, if your computer is running slowly another stick of RAM can solve the problem. RAM will also increase gaming performance, and just improve the computing experience.
  • If you are running Windows XP, 1GB of RAM will do fine.
  • If you are running Vista, 2GB is needed to run properly.
  • Nothing really.
