How to train your puppy to go potty in the litter box.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A litter box
  • Paper towels
  1. Step 1

When you add a new puppy to the family. The biggest concern is how to get the puppy trained. This can be very frustrating. I would recommend getting the new puppy when you plan on being home (for a week) to spend time with the new puppy.

  2. Step 2

You will need a litter box, paper towels and a open top cage/pen.

  3. Step 3

You will need to get the puppy on a schedule. When you feed the dog, immediately the dog will need to go to the potty. Pick the puppy up and put the puppy in the cage with the litter box. Tell the puppy to go into the litter box. If the puppy does not seem to understand you, then lift the dog up and put the dog in the litter box. Once the dog is in the litter box tell the dog to go potty. Shortly after eating and drinking, the puppy will need to go to the bathroom.

  4. Step 4

Once the puppy goes to the bathroom in the litter box. Praise the puppy with a small treat and take the puppy out of the cage and clean the litter box. If the litter box is not cleaned, the puppy will not want to go back in next time. Puppies like a clean box.

  5. Step 5

In general, a puppy needs to go potty right after waking up, after playing, after eating and drinking. The general rule is a puppy can go one hour for month-of-age plus one. If a puppy is two-months-old, then the puppy can hold its bladder and bowels for 3 hours (2 months = 2 hours + 1). By the time a puppy is 6 months old, the puppy can "hold it" for up to 7 hours.

Tips & Warnings
  • Reward your puppy for good behavior.
  • Be patient and persistent, then your puppy will learn.
