Things You'll Need:
- A bat, a ball, a home plate or anything that will serve as a home plate.
-
Step 1
First the player stands in the box assuming a normal batting stance. The player wants to be even with the plate or towards the front of the batters box so the bunt will go fair.
-
Step 2
As the pitcher begins his windup, the player pivots on the toe of his rear foot, and opens up his lead foot shoulder width and pointing towards the mound area. The final stance will be a staggered position with the lead (open) foot forward and the rear foot back.
-
Step 3
As the player pivots into position he slides his upper hand 1/2 the way up the bat, right before the bat reaches its maximum width. The player pinches the bat with his thumb and index finger. It is important that the players upper hand fingers do not wrap around the bat. They must pinch the bat and be protected by the barrel to avoid injury to the fingers. The lower hand remains at the handle.
-
Step 4
The placement of the bat as noted in the picture is at the top of the strike zone and at the front part of the plate. The head of the bat is above the hands and the bat is extended in front of the hitter so he can see the bat and the ball. Too many players hold the bat to close to the body.
-
Step 5
As the pitch approaches the strike zone the batter moves his body up and down by bending his knees to adjust to the height of the pitch. The batter does not drop the bat head to bunt the ball. This will result in a pop up.
-
Step 6
Upon contact with the ball the batter catches the ball with the sweet spot(fat part) of the bat. He does not stab at the ball with the bat, but tries to catch and deaden the ball with the bat. The velocity of the pitch should be enough to get the ball down and away from home plate.
