Things You'll Need:
- 3 yds. red cotton fabric
- 3 yds. white fabric
- Sewing thread
- glue on Velcro dots or squares
- Quit batting or fiber fill
-
Step 1
*Cut 24 white 3/4" squares and 24 red 3/4" squares.
*Cut one piece from the red that is 25" x 25" square for the back of the checkerboard.
*Cut a strip that is 6" x 25" to place in the middle of the checkerboard to divide the sides. -
Step 2
* Sew the squares together as shown in the diagram.
* Lay the top and back pices together wrong sides out and stitch around 3 edges, leaving one edge open.
* Turn the quilt right side out and insert the quilt batting or fiberfill.
* Then sew the open end closed. -
Step 3
* To make the checkers cut 12- 4" circles of red fabric and 12 -4" circles of white.
*For each checker use one circle. Handsew a basting stich around the edge of the circle on the right side of the fabric , about 1/4" from the edge.
* On the last stitch pull the thread so the fabric gathers in the middle.
* While there is still a small opening insert a little fiberfill or piece of quilt batting to make it slightly puffy.
* Then sew a couple stitches to close the opening.
Do this for each checker. -
Step 4
* Stick a Velcro dot or half of a small square of velcro over the closed opening of each checker.
* Go back to the finished checkerboard and sew a few lines of stiches along the squares the same as you would for a regular quilt. Then place a small dot or piece of velcro on the center of each checkerboard square.
