This article will give you some tips and pointers on how to maintain your central vacuum and keep it running like new, even after years of use.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

First, always be aware of things you should NOT pick up with your central vacuum. Things such as water, construction dust and fine powder can ruin a central vacuum motor and in most cases the motor will not be covered under warranty.

  2. Step 2

Next, always make sure you empty your canister or change your bag on a regular basis. Allowing dirt and debris to build up will put strain on the motor and clog your filter. I suggest changing your bag or dumping your canister when 3/4 full.

  3. Step 3

Change or clean filters in a timely manner. If you have a permanent filter, make sure to clean it every time you change a bag or dump your canister. If your central vacuum has a replaceable filter, make sure to check the manual and change accordingly.

Lastly, before every bag change or canister dump, use maintenance cloths. These inexpensive cloths are great for keeping your pipes clean, preventing clogs and giving your canister a fresh clean smell. You simply suck up one cloth per inlet right before you empty the vacuum.
