Create An Easy Water Garden

Adding a water feature or garden to your landscape doesn't have to be difficult or expensive. By setting up your own water feature instead of purchasing one that is ready to plug in, you can make your garden a reflection of your own personality and style.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Waterproof Container
  • Small Fountain Pump
  • Concrete block
  • Metal grate
  • Water Spitter
  • Rocks and water plants
  1. Step 1

Select a waterproof container, such as a large pot, lined whiskey barrel or container of your choice. If your pot has a drainage hole, you can seal the hole with silicone, making sure it is completely dry before adding water.

  2. Step 2

Place a concrete block or upside down clay pot in the bottom of your container. The top of your block or pot needs to be no taller than about six inches below the surface of the water.

  3. Step 3

Place the grate on top of the concrete block or upturned pot. This grate will hold your plants and rocks just below the surface of the water. I have used the front grate of an old round fan that no longer worked. You can also use the grate from a barbeque grill or a metal rack for cooling baked items. Place a fairly heavy rock in the center directly on top of the block to stabilize this grate.

  4. Step 4

Place your pump on top of the grate with the cord and the tubing coming out to the back of the pot.

  5. Step 5

Use a flat rock or even a board that will set on the back one-third of the pot and will hold your spitter. Make sure there is a gap behind it for the pump cord and tube to fit through.

  6. Step 6

Place your spitter on top of the rock or board and attach the tube from the spitter.

  7. Step 7

Fill your pot with water, plug in the pump and make sure the spitter is situated in the location that you want it.

  8. Step 8

Finish by placing your water plants on the grate and then place rocks or other decorative items around the plants to stabilize them and to completely cover the grate. Add more rocks around your splitter and to cover the cords and tube.
