Parallel Parking a Car
Parallel Parking a Car

Everyone believes they're going to fail their parallel parking test, but that doesn't have to be the case! By keeping a few simple steps in mind, and getting in plenty of practice, you'll be a parallel parking pro in no time.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A car.
  1. Step 1

(Parallel parking is a hard thing to learn from a written article. Watch the video under the "Resources" section before your parallel parking test to review these steps.)

  2. Step 2

Make sure your cell phone is off!

  3. Step 3

Pull up alongside the space where you intend to parallel park. Make sure that the full length of your car will fit in that space. During your parallel parking test, choose a space with ample room.

  4. Step 4

Pull up next to the car in front of the space until your car is parallel with it. Try to be as close to this car as you can (without hitting it!).

  5. Step 5

Align your rear tire with the rear tire of the car next to you, and put your turn signal on.

  6. Step 6

Put the car in reverse, turn your wheel all the way towards the curb, and begin backing into the space slowly.

  7. Step 7

Once your rear passenger door is aligned with the rear bumper of the car that you're parking behind, start to turn your wheel in the opposite direction and slide your car in behind the rear bumper of the other car.

  8. Step 8

Depending on the size of your car and the parallel parking space, you'll need to rock back and forth slightly to straighten your wheels and align yourself in the space. You'll want to center yourself in the space to leave enough room for you (and the car behind you) to exit easily when it's time to leave.

  9. Step 9

You did it! Take a deep breath and (mentally) pat yourself on the back. Continue on with the rest of your test.

Tips & Warnings
  • Try to relax as much as you can before your parallel parking test. Listening to a soothing song -- or just taking a few deep breaths -- before you start to parallel park can help calm your nerves and make you a better parallel parker.
  • If you don't have your license yet, always practice parallel parking with an approved adult in the car.
  • To avoid damaging other vehicles, start practicing parallel parking on a curb with no other cars around.
