Step 1
DETERMINE WHAT KIND OF AUCTION IT IS
In order to know exactly what you are getting into, it's important to know what kind of auction you are attending. Is it a garage sale type auction where individual items are up for bid or is it an auction where entire units are being auctioned off as a whole? If it's garage sale style you will be able to pick and choose what item you want, while entire units can be full of random items.
Depending on how much work you want or what you are looking for, one auction style will be better than the other. Contact the storage facility for details. -
Step 2
CONFIRM THE AUCTION
Many storage unit facilities give their tenants up until the day of the auction to make good on their contract. This may mean that the unit and any items may be taken off the auction list at the last minute. Be prepared by making a phone call ahead of time to see how many units will be up for auction and whether they are still going to occur before you leave your house. -
Step 3
EXHAUST YOUR RESOURCES
Use all your resources in finding storage unit auctions in your area. Check local newspapers for announcements and make phone calls to your local storage facilities. Storage unit auctions may also be advertised online or by billboard in front of the storage buildings. -
Step 4
COME PREPARED
Make sure you bring all the supplies you will need for your storage unit auction. Verify what kind of funds you will need available for your purchases. Bring cash if it is the preferred method, as some facilities will favor those with cash offers. Other supplies you may need include tools (screwdrivers or wrenches), batteries, gloves, or a flashlight. -
Step 5
DON'T BE DISCOURAGED
Consistency is key when shopping at any auction or used-goods sale. While one sale or auction may be a dud, another may be a goldmine. Don't get easily discouraged by storage unit auctions where the goods are less than desirable. Keep going to them and you may eventually find your treasures.
