So April 15 is quickly approaching and you still have not filed your taxes. Fear not, the government allows individuals to file for an extension on your taxes that gives you an additional six months to file. This extension gives you the time you may need to get your accounts in order or to build up enough income to pay off any debts you may owe. Luckily the process is also very simple.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Form 4868
  1. Step 1

    Visit www.IRS.gov and do a search for Form 4868 Application for Automatic Extension of Time to File U.S. Income Tax Return. You can also search for Form 7004 for your business returns or Form 1138 for your corporation expecting a loss.

  2. Step 2

    Fill out the simple PDF application.

  3. Step 3

    Print the form and mail it to your local tax office as shown on the last page of the application.

  4. Step 4

    File your taxes within six months of tax day to avoid penalties.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you do not have a computer connected to a printer, these forms can be found in most government buildings to include libraries and courthouses.
  • These forms are available in Spanish if preferred.
  • To file for an extension on your taxes, all applications must be post-marked by the tax day of that year, typically April 15.
