You'll need lots of Peeps

When Easter comes around each year, people go Peep crazy. Finding new ways to use the colorful marshmallow Peeps intrigues and challenges Peep fanatics. Here's one way to use Peeps creatively in a diorama.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • a box like a shoebox
  • Peeps
  • glue, scissors, craft material
  1. Step 1

Get some packages of Peeps. Buy more than you think you'll need. Some may get damaged as you experiment with placement in the diorama or try dressing them in costumes. Others might get eaten if you get a snack attack in the middle of the project. I like to have a variety of colors and shapes on hand.

  2. Step 2

If you made dioramas in school using shoeboxes, glue and crayons, then you already have the basic concept. First you need to find a box, either a shoebox or some larger box to house the diorama. Don't get too large a box (keep it in proportion to the Peeps' size).

  3. Step 3

Think of a theme for the scene you want to create in the diorama. Check out the link below to see examples of dioramas with themes like Peeparinas (ballerina Peeps), Splish-Splash (Peeps in a bathtub), Peep-O-Prom (Peeps at a dance), Peeps Idol (talent contest), and other scenes. You could choose to create a scene from a favorite movie or television show or have the Peeps carrying out everyday activities.

  4. Step 4

Transform the box interior into the background needed for the scene you choose. For instance in the Peeps Idol diorama, the box is covered in glittery gift wrap to mimic the American Idol set. For the Splish-Splash diorama, the creator used wallpaper with a small print for the walls of the bathroom scene.

  5. Step 5

Gather props to create the scene. You can use dollhouse furniture or make your own from paper and anything you can find around your house. The more detail you can add, the better. For instance, in the Peep-O-Prom, there's even a refreshments table for the dancing Peeps. The table with slices of pizza on it.

  6. Step 6

Create costumes for the Peeps to wear in the diorama scene. You can use fabric to make their outfits (sew or glue them), or decorate the Peeps with cake icing to look like clothing.

  7. Step 7

You can enter your diorama in contests or just make it to enjoy yourself. Search the internet for the keywords, "Peeps diorama" to find the contests. The Washington Post Peeps Diorama contest had 800 entries in 2009. Other newspapers around the country sponsored contests too.

Tips & Warnings
  • It's OK to use glue on the Peeps as these won't be eaten.

on 5/6/2009 What a super cute idea. I think we have some stale peeps left and this sounds like a fun project for my daughter!

on 4/9/2009 I'm afraid I'd never get anything made with peeps because I would eat them all. But such a cute idea and maybe the kids won't eat so many. I'd give you 50 points if they would let me. Gail
